💡 Introduction

This past week, I took on a challenge that tested my patience and deepened my technical understanding. I decided to customize an Astro Bento-style portfolio template into my own personal website. What started as a simple fork of Gianmarco Cavallo’s open-source design quickly became an immersive journey in web structure, styling, and problem-solving.

The goal was simple: create a portfolio that represents me: clean, minimal, and professional. But as I soon discovered, even with a ready template, building a personalized site is never as easy as it looks.

🧰 Learning Curve and Tools Used

Since I wasn’t building from scratch, I began by forking a repository (copying an existing project on GitHub so I could customize it). I worked mainly in Visual Studio Code (VS Code), a developer’s text editor that lets you write, edit, and preview code. My main stack included VS Code, GitHub for version control, Node.js with npm (short for Node Package Manager, used to install project dependencies), and Vercel for hosting the finished site.

For real-time help, I used ChatGPT (Codex) connected directly to my IDE (short for Integrated Development Environment). That allowed AI to “see” my local files and help me debug specific problems right inside the editor. I didn’t do heavy manual coding myself, but I learned how each command and edit shaped the final look and feel of my site.

🎨 Customizations and Debugging Process

Every card and section in the template received some form of customization. I rewrote the text in the Intro Card and About Me Card, replaced icons, and refined color transitions to better match my brand. I also integrated my Medium blog so that my latest posts would automatically update on the site.

Adding the scrollable About Me section turned out to be one of my favorite features. I wanted it to display neatly with subtle scroll behavior, yet keep the same visual harmony as the other cards. Adjusting font size and spacing was a balancing act between readability and consistency.

I learned that debugging in Astro often means checking component boundaries (how each modular piece interacts with another). A tiny CSS style inside one card could easily break the layout of another. Each time something shifted out of place, I’d inspect, tweak, refresh, and test again.

There were plenty of small wins, like fixing a misaligned Memoji image, and some frustrating setbacks when even the simplest color change caused chaos.

🧩 Design and Layout Improvements

My focus was on keeping the minimalist “bento” aesthetic but infusing it with warmth and personality. I added a custom scroll bar that aligned with the site’s dark gray palette and changed color on hover. The Memoji image, generated from my iPhone, replaced the default cartoon avatar. Getting the sizing right was tricky, but it taught me how image scaling works across responsive layouts (how a site adjusts to different screen sizes).

I also implemented red hover effects on links to create subtle movement and guide attention. Adjusting the time zone display script taught me about JavaScript date objects (code that handles time conversions automatically).

To make the introduction more dynamic, I added a typing effect to the intro card so that my name and role appear gradually, as if being typed in real time. It’s a small feature that adds personality and energy to the page, creating a friendly first impression while showcasing how animation can enhance user experience.

By the end, each change felt small but meaningful, like laying one brick at a time until the structure finally looked and behaved the way I wanted.

🚧 Biggest Mistakes and How I Fixed Them

The hardest mistake to fix came when I tried adding a light/dark mode toggle. Because every card in the template was interconnected, one small theme update would trigger unintended design changes elsewhere. It was a real debugging puzzle.

I broke the site more than once. Fonts vanished, colors inverted, and the layout collapsed. I learned that not every feature is plug-and-play; understanding how different files and variables interact is critical.

Eventually, with the help of OpenAI’s Codex model, which analyzed the entire codebase, I found what was blocking the toggle and resolved it. That experience taught me how powerful AI can be when it’s used to complement human reasoning.

📚 Lessons Learned

This project strengthened both my technical and soft skills. On the technical side, I gained hands-on experience in:

The site is live on Vercel, but it’s still a work in progress. I plan to connect my custom domain soon and keep improving the experience. Future ideas include adding a smarter dark-mode toggle that remembers user preferences, a “Now” page that tracks what I’m learning, and maybe even smooth animations for card transitions.

Though this project isn’t tied to cybersecurity or GRC, it reflects my approach to both. I aim to be meticulous, analytical, and curiosity-driven. Every pixel and paragraph taught me something about systems, structure, and precision.

This project reminded me that learning by doing is the best kind of education. I didn’t just watch tutorials; I experimented, broke things, and fixed them. And in the process, I learned how to build with confidence.
